His friend Billy, who breaks him out of police custody, and Clydie (Rosanna Arquette), a worn down widow and mother of two youngstersbr /3. Does he take his shirt off? In one of the most disturbingly inappropriate images possible in a movie, Sam is completely naked in front of Clydie’s children. Luckily, the viewers are spared.br /4. Does he have sex with a C-List actress? In one of his most provocative sex scenes ever, Sam and Arquette do a little carnal gymnastics (JCVD gets to a legit second base on film).br /5. Is there a tournament? JCVD steers away from his kumite roots in this one.br /6. Is training needed for this tournament? He clearly trained and prepared in some way, because he beats everyone down, has a law degree, understands the nuances of the animalistic fright-versus-flight dynamic, is an accomplished motorcycle stuntman, and knows how to drive a forklift.br /7. Does he do the splits in training or in the tournament? Sorry JCVD fans, no splits.br /8. Does he punch someone in the balls? In the first fight of the movie, one unfortunate guy gets an axe handle to the jewels.br /9. Does he do a series of flying or 360 kicks? No jumping of flying in this one.br /10. Is his enemy unbeatable? Essentially he’s fighting “The Man” and “The System”; so, it depends on your point of view.br /11. Does he overcome an injury or other hindrance? It’s possible that he had some broken ribs, but that didn’t stop him from fixing Clydie’s pipes. br /12. Does he win? Hmmm…br /br /Nowhere to Run is almost a mirror image of the 1953 classic Shane. An outlaw escaping his past, houses up with a family struggling against the classic tale of greedy corporation versus small land owner. With a sheriff – played by the guy who played Mr. Belding’s brother in one episode of “Saved by the Bell” – paid off by the land developer, and a creepy henchman played by Ted Levine, a man who appears to be perfectly suited for only that role, it’s up to Sam to save the day. Motivated by the taut, perky body of Arquette, not to mention multiple full frontal shower and sex scenes, JCVD gives us perhaps the best movie in his legendary career, following the lead from Shane one last time, as he rides off into the sunset of an ambiguous future.

Poor Rosanna Arquette ended up in this Van Damme potboiler about an escaped convict who moves onto the farm of a widow (Arquette) and her two kids. Stuff happens: a cop who likes her gets jealous and beats up the Muscles from Brussels (but only after handcuffing him), there’s a fire in the barn, bad guys are trying to drive her away, etc. The story was first developed by screenwriter Joe Eszterhas (iBasic Instinct/i) and the late director Richard Marquand (iEye of the Needle/i). Eszterhas wrote the script, but who knows what direction this story was originally going? Van Damme’s best film is still iTimecop/i, and this is a long way from the quality of that. I–Tom Keogh/I

Amazing show and what a price! Under 11 bucks, are you kidding? Worth thrice that at least. Action packed, a perfect homage to the beloved 80’s show and a darker, better animated revision to boot. I love how they explore the origin of not only several key characters but Eternia as well. This is non-stop entertainment and a lively animated He-man show that should have gotten more episodes during its run. A clean, fantastic look to this show highlights the obvious upgrades to every character from the original Masters of the Universe.

Every episode is jam packed with heavy pathos and heart-wrenching developements. Every twist and story thread matters, every character plays a role and real peril is at every corner. These are writers that know drama and the original characters and show very well. As a huge fan of the 80’s incarnation, I was blown away by this. Top-notch all the way.

His cargo: a little girl named Alvis. br /br /Unfortunately, getting Alvis safely to the rendezvous is no easy task — especially when the ship picking her up turns out to be the legendary, deadly Silvana. It’s full of glowing light, vast expanses of cloads and flowing cities, and beautiful mountainous landscapes and clouds that could have come straight from a Hayao Miyazaki movie. Not to mention some brilliant airborne battles. br /br /The many subplots of the series unspool gradually throughout each episode, twining together as the plot goes on — such as Alex’s vendetta, the plans of the villain Delphine, and the mysterious Grand Stream that seems to be central to the mysteries of Prester. The dialogue is rather run-of-the-mill, but the carefully-drawn world (complete with water shortages and a fictional fuel called “claudia”) make up for that, as well as the tangled political clashes that stretch from one episode to the next. br /br /The last few episodes are a bit of a mindbender. The plot becomes a bit tangled up, before twisting into a startling revelation about the world of Prester — which admittedly, while carefully foreshadowed, is quite a surprise when it’s revealed. br /br /Claus and Lavie make a likable pair of protagonists — he’s mellow, sweet and rather laid-back, while she’s fiery and easily upset (”This is OUR vanship, and YOU can’t touch it!”), so they end up playing well off each other. And the supporting cast is a pretty solid one, with a ride range of personalities and plenty of likable minor characters (like the mechanics). Among the standouts: the melancholy and mysterious Alex Rowe, Alvis, the whimsical and tragic Dio, and vanship pilot Tatiana (who develops a crush on Claus). br /br /”Last Exile: The Complete Series” has a few odd twists, but it’s a solid and atmospheric anime series that glides slowly to a rather startling conclusion.

While the current trend in scary movies seems to be becoming the property of the Computer Generated Graphics industry, real terror comes from studying the possibilities of a human mind scarred by trauma. Such is the material that makes ALREADY DEAD a frightening film – a revenge story by Robert Lynn Archer transformed for the screen by Joe Chappelle and directed imaginatively by Joe Otting. If the theme of a citizen taking justice into his own hands is not new, it wears well enough when we consider the current state of criminal justice as portrayed in the media today.

Thomas Archer (Ron Eldard) is living a successful, happy life until a burglary associated with the death of the babysitter and his son and the beating of his wife disrupts everything. Thomas is informed that the police don’t have the manpower to investigate the killings, a fact that further enrages Thomas who is unable to work or function in his grief state. He is referred to a therapist Dr. Heller (Christopher Plummer) who oddly counsels him that perhaps the only way Thomas can get on with his life is to do everything in his power to track the killer down on his own. ‘Arrangements’ are made with a group of men (mostly frustrated cops) who inform Thomas that for a large fee they will take him to the killer and he can act on his vengeance. Transported by cellphone instructions to a deserted warehouse, Thomas encounters a bound and gagged man (Til Schweiger) who he is told is the killer of his son. Thomas begins his torture of the man only to gradually discover that the man does not bear the arm tattoo Thomas had clearly seen on the perpetrator. Dr. Heller is called to the scene and encourages Thomas to kill the suspect, but Thomas has enough doubt that he frees the suspect and together they begin a terrifying journey out of the maze-like warehouse. The ending may not come as a complete surprise, but it is the telling of the story as basically a character study between the two men that makes the film powerful.

Both Ron Eldard and Til Schweiger are completely convincing in their not so disparate roles: they both have very strong screen presences and with minimal dialog manage to take us, the audience, along with this creepy ‘game’. There is some violence to be sure, but the terror of the film emanates more from the interaction of Eldard and Schweiger, each showing the extremes the bruised psyche can display. Not a great film but a film far above the routine ‘horror picture’ category. Grady Harp, March 08

He also made ‘Sex And Fury’, ‘Girl Boss Guerilla’, and ‘Girl Boss Revenge’, and if you`re familiar w/ any of them, you know exactly what you`re getting into here. Not really a high school but a reform school, the students at this institution major in one thing only: survival. Bad girls must face off against one another in power plays, fend off lecherous teachers, corrupt politicians and a sadistic student body that murders when crossed.
