Acclaimed director Yoji Yamada, well-known in Japan for his films based on the fishing manga “Tsuribaka Nisshi” (aka “Free and Easy) went into a direction of creating a film trilogy based on samurai. Both films such as 2002’s “Tasogare Seibei (The Twilight Samurai) and 2004’s “Kakushi Ken Oni no Tsume” (aka The Hidden Blade) were critically acclaimed and were award winning films. But his final in the trilogy would be the 2006 film “Bushi no Ichibun” (Love and Honor) starring SMAP vocalist Takuya Kimura.br /br /Takuya Kimura is one of Japan’s popular and trendy stars known for his dramas such as “Long Vacation”, “Love Revolution”, “GIFT”, “Hero” and many other television dramas that have achieved enormous ratings in Japan. But one area that Kimura at the time had not conquered was the big screen. Having appeared in Wong Kar-Wai’s “2046 in 2004, it was not until “Bushi no Ichibun” that would give the actor fame for his award-winning performance for his role as the character of Shinnojo Mimura. But also gain a lot of press when the actor declined his 2007 nomination for the Japanese Academy Awards because he felt that he didn’t deserve to be in the same category with the other, more distinguished actors that were nominated.br /br /Needless to say, “Bushi no Ichibun” (Love and Honor) was nominated for 13 Japanese Academy Awards and won three for “Best Cinematography”, “Best Lighting” and “Best Supporting Actor” and Takuya Kimura was now seen more than just a commercial actor and would go on to receive critical success with another film the following year with “Hero”. As for Yoji Yamada, he has went on to do more adaptations with his “Tsuribaka Nisshi” films and also create another award winning film in 2008 titled “Kabe”.br /br /The film stars Takuya Kimura as Shinnojo Mimura. He has a good life, living in a home with his loving wife Kayo (Rei Dan) and his servant Tokuhei (Takashi Sasano) but he is growing tired of his job as a samurai with a job being a food taster for his Lord. During those times, samurai’s served as food tasters because of enemy infiltration trying to assassinate a clan’s lord via poison through the food. Samurai’s taste the food and if they suffer no illness, the food is then given to the Lord of their clan.br /br /But Shinnojo is growing tired and wants to quit it all by starting up his own dojo and teaching children how to fight with this sword. His wife is supportive of his decision and looks forward for him to train the children at their home.br /br /But during a usual day of food tasting, Shinnojo suffers from food poisoning from a fish that is not supposed to be served on a certain type of dish and can create a toxin that can kill a person. The good news is that Shinnojo manages to survive, the bad news is that the effects of the poisoning has left him blind.br /br /With Shinnojo unable to perform his duties as a samurai, the family now goes through a crisis of who will be the financial provider and Shinnojo now feeling worthless because not only will he lose his his samurai status, he loses his pride. And thus, he is left with darkness and contemplating suicide. Despite what has gone wrong, his wife Kayo loves him unconditionally no matter what. She will do anything for her husband.br /br /With family trying to help Kayo with choices of how she can help take care of herself and her husband, a higher-ranked samurai named Toya Shimada who has been smitten with Kayo when she was single, has offered to help her…but for a price. She give up her body to him and he will try to get people to support her family in continuing his samurai stipend.br /br /When Shinnojo finds out that his Lord has agreed to continue his stipend, rumors start to circulate about his wife being with another man. Shinnojo wonders at what price his wife may have had to pay in order to get his stipend and thus it sets him off into a dangerous path that may lead him to losing everything that is precious to him including his own life.br /br /VIDEO AUDIO:br /br /”Love and Honor” is presented in 16:9 widescreen. Picture quality especially the cinematography by Mutsuo Naganuma is absolutely beautiful. Although most of the film is shot at the home of Shinnojo Mimura, there are intricate details of how things were in feudal Japan. For example, using a pot with hot coal in order to iron clothes and also the costume design and set production looks absolutely fantastic.br /br /Audio is presented in Japanese 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound and for the most part, the film is dialogue-based and front and center channel driven. There are scenes during heavy rainfall that utilize the surround but for the most part, dialogue and the music are through the front and center channels. The DVD also includes an English dubbed track in stereo which is not my preference but I can understand those who don’t like reading subtitles, wanting to watch it with English dialogue.br /br /As for subtitles, English subtitles are offered.br /br /SPECIAL FEATURES:br /br /There are no special features included on the DVD.br /br /JUDGMENT CALL:br /br /”Love and Honor” (Bushi no Ichibun) is an excellent film. The talent were well-cast, the storyline was fantastic, the production and costume design was well-done, personally this is a wonderful film that I wholeheartedly recommend.br /br /Personally, it was great to see Takuya Kimura in such a serious role. As a fan of many of his Japanese dramas, you come to expect a lot of trendiness when it comes to his roles but like many Japanese viewers, who were skeptical if Kimura could transition into the big screen but most of all play a believable samurai, Takuya Kimura definitely delivered.br /br /As for director Yoji Yamada, his films are expected to be successful. Even when I started watching his films beginning with “Tsuribaka nisshi 3 back in 1990, when it came to watching Japanese films, my Japanese friends would always recommend his films and would tell me he is like the Spielberg from Japan. Needless to say, the excitement that he has brought to his films, especially his samurai trilogy and how well-crafted they are shows how passionate and amazing the director truly is.br /br /But as I explain to you of all the positives of “Love and Honor”, I do have one major negative and that is the lack of special features included on the DVD. No Japanese trailer, no featurette, nothing. In Japan, there were probably five different releases for this film on DVD but special features ranged from backstage footage, a promotional video, sword battling featurette, interviews with the talent, footage from the 78 days of filming and more. So, it’s difficult to know that you enjoyed this film so much but there are no special features on the DVD.br /br /”Love and Honor” is a fantastic film! If you enjoy films that are about feudal Japan or are a Yoji Yamada or KimuTaku fan, “Love and Honor” is definitely recommended!

Love and Honor Overview

An award winning masterpiece of sacrifice and devotion, Love and Honor weaves a timeless tale set in the waning days of feudal Japan. Directed by Academy Award® nominee Yoji Yamada (The Twilight Samurai) and starring Takuya Kimura (2046), Love and Honor depicts the emotional intensity of an age when respect was more valuable than riches and love cut more truly than any sword.pShinnojo Mimura is a samurai sharing a hand-to-mouth existence with his beautiful wife, Kayo. Frustrated by his lowly status within the castle ranks, Shinnojo dreams of better days instructing children in the way of the sword. But destiny, it would seem, has other plans… A freak accident takes the warrior’s sight, leaving Shinnojo cursed. Losing his status and pride, his hopes and dreams, and even himself to this life of eternal darkness, only one path lies open for Shinnojo: That of the true and noble samurai.pLove and Honor – Tale of the fallen samurai.

Love and Honor Specifications

Shinnojo (Takuya Kimura) is a low-level samurai bored with his assignment as a food-taster for his emperor. Like any young husband, Shinnojo shares his work frustrations at home with his wife, Kayo (Rei Dan), and dreams of resigning his post to start a dojo that will teach fighting skills to kids in a positive environment. Shinnojo and Kayo clearly care for each other, teasing and sharing laughs just out of earshot of their longtime helper, Tokuhei (Takashi Sasano). Everything changes, however, when Shinnojo eats some bad shellfish intended for the emperor–so bad that it leaves him permanently blind. Feeling useless and facing an uncertain future, Shinnojo experiences grief and anger. Meanwhile, Kayo appeals to his family for help and is only advised to seek assistance from another samurai (Mitsugoro Bando), a man with dubious intentions toward Kayo. The fallout deeply affects Shinnojo and Kayo’s marriage, and gives the former a new reason to carry on: defending his and Kayo’s honor. This domestic drama by Yôji Yamada, based on a story by Shûhei Fujisawa, has the slow, somber tone both of ritual and a tragedy unfolding behind closed doors. A much more handsome than cinematically exciting movie, ILove and Honor/I is like a silent era melodrama with visually appealing actors, a story blatantly tugging at the audience’s heartstrings. A climactic fight scene gets one’s adrenaline going, though nothing tops the promise of forgiveness and reconciliation for real excitement here. I–Tom Keogh/I

The cinemtography was awesome, giving a really immersive feeling, although there’s a blue tint to it that occassionally threw me off, but it was still a beautiful film to watch. And that’s something really special coming out a straight up action movie. br /br /The story follows an assassin who is troubled with his choices in life who is contracted to kill a troubled young pop star. The problem is that his adoptive brother, who his adopted father told him was dead, turns out to be part of her bodyguard troupe. So he passes the assignment, and protects his brother and the target from the next duo of assassins who are given the job leading to the main conflict of the movie.br /br /And the conflict was top notch. Every burst of gunfire felt powerful, the car chase sequence jarring, the fistfight sequences grueling and damaging. All of it was choreographed and filmed expertly, and there was plenty of it at just the right pace. It’s everything an action junkie could ask for. The finale even takes place in a FLAMMABLE MATERIALS WAREHOUSE!br /br /The story and characters give the film a sort of classic 70s grindhouse action feel too, so this separates it from being a run of the mill action movie. Even though the story’s not all that gripping, and the dialogue is 100% typical action movie lines (no one-liners but lots of melodrama) it all meshes. It’s a really, really fun film and definitely packed full of grade A action.br /br /The soundtrack is great too. It calls back to the glory days of the late 90s/early 00s when anytime something exciting started to happen exciting songs would start playing. So leading into almost every fight we get some bass-heavy music or excitable violent rap songs playing. It may sound, tacky, but it’s not overused and the songs are very well chosen and fit nicely. br /br /All in all, a very solid action flick.

The Fifth Commandment Feature

The Fifth Commandment Overview

After witnessing the brutal murder of his parents as a young boy, Chance Templeton (Rick Yune – i The Fast and the Furious/i, iDie Another Day/i) is taken in by a ruthless killer (Keith David – iDirty/i, iCrash/i) and raised to follow in his footsteps. An assassin’s trade is solitary by nature, but Chance shares a tight bond with his adopted brother, Miles (Bokeem Woodbine – TV’s “Saving Grace,” IRay/i), who’s elected a more honorable path working as a bodyguard for a sultry pop star (Dania Ramirez – TV’s “Heroes”). brbr When Chance is contracted to gun down his brother’s client, he realizes there is finally a line he cannot cross. Uniting with his brother to stave off an expected hit, Chance finds himself targeted by the elite members of his own profession as he struggles to protect a woman who stubbornly rejects his services. Set against the steamy backdrop of Bangkok, this action thriller is bursting with some of the meanest stunts and fight scenes. This is high-octane action at it’s best.

20th Century Boys seems to have been inspired in parts of the story by the works of Stephen King, containing allusions to It and The Stand. However, the story draws allusions mostly from rock and roll, with its title based on T. Rex’s famous song, “20th Century Boy”.

“You can’t take it with you,” I’ve heard said. It’s true: one cannot take it with one. When I heard this line (not in Superman III), I began to reflect in a way that I had never reflected before. When one dies–I mean, really dies–what does he carry from this life into the next? Not one’s material objects, they are fleeting. One’s memories? I hope so, because if I can’t bring my film prints (material objects), and I can’t bring my memories, then how will I bring Superman III to the afterworld? (I do not know what kind of afterworld there is, or if there is one at all, although I believe that there is.) If there was one thing in this non-permanent world that I could bring over into eternity, it would be Superman III. This is absolutely true. The only reason I’m alive right now is because of Superman III–what else is there in this world of suffering and tragedy? And yet, I am frightened by death. I am afraid of death because I don’t know if there will be Superman III on The Other Side. Yes, horrible, terrible things have happened to me, and horrible, terrible things await me, and yet every day I am “in joy” (to quote Jim Perry) because Superman III is out there, and I know it so thoroughly, it’s in my memory, I know every line, every shot, every gesture (and yet, still yet, there is always more to be discovered!), it is with me interminably, and it makes death frightening. I don’t think that there is cinema in the other world, which is very, very depressing. I don’t even want to talk about how sad it is. I weep, nightly. This movie was made by “life-affirm[er]” Richard Lester (”The Beatles A Hard Day’s Night,” “The Beatles Help!”), and it really stands above anything else out there. The comedy is very, VERY spot-on, with Richard Pryor doing his funny-man routine…it is very, very righteous, but it is also a classic character, a man who fights with his morality (good vs. evil), and comes out on top (he turns out good)! He is the quintessiantal human character, “Odyssey-esque” (as old Cock used to say), an everyman for today. Superman (who is superhuman) also fights the ultimate–I would even say PENultimate (best ever) good vs. evil scene…he fights with himself……….Literally! Clark Kent fights with his evil impulses, personified as Superman with a slight stubble (this technically dazzling scene was accomplished with the use of split-screen technology and stand-ins, who look VERY convincing), and comes out on top–barely! I can’t get enough of it. Also, there is a pretty girl in this film (can you guess who?). Thanks to the Warner Brothers for putting this one out on DVD, why did it take so long!!!! The Warner Brothers really care about their customers, and that’s what sets them apart. My only complaint is that Lois Lane doesn’t get enough screen time in this movie, perhaps as a result of M. Kidder’s condition.

Superman III (Deluxe Edition) Overview

After Superman: The Movie’s epic storytelling and Superman II’s awesome battles, how could the first two hits be topped? In Superman III, meet Gus Gorman (Richard Pryor), a half-witted computer programming natural. For him a keyboard is a weapon – and Superman faces the microelectronic menace of his life. Christopher Reeve reprises his most beloved role, deepening his character’s human side as Clark Kent reunites with old flame Lana Lang (Annette O’Toole) at a Smallville High class reunion. And when Superman becomes his own worst enemy after Kryptonite exposure, Reeve pulls off both roles with dazzling skill. Incredible visual effects abound – but above all it has heart, heroism and high-flying humor. All in superabundance.

The listing as amazon puts it is the same as the original release (which is NOT to be confused with the new version, of which the picture is shown) with the exception of “TNT jackson”. Instead of “TNT jackson” you get Fist of Fear, Touch of death. br /br /Now since amazon is listing the picture for the re-release of this box set, im going to assume that’s the version they are selling. It should be noted that along with “TNT jackson”, you get four other movies which are:br /br /Breakout from oppressionbr /Day of the Pantherbr /Jive Turkeybr /The Guy from harlembr /br /the movies they replace are the aformentioned “Fist of fear, touch of death” along withbr /br /Death Machinesbr /Death of a ninjabr /Sister Street Fighterbr /Ten Fingers of death (which to Morgoth, is the Jackie chan movie Master with cracked fingers under an alternate title) br /br /Also the movie with chow yun fat in it is entitled “the Head hunter”.br /br /The easiest way to tell the difference is that the original (and it should be noted BETTER) version has a non-descript guy on the cover as opposed to bruce lee.br /br /Now that thats out of the way, I can get on to the other thing i wanted to mention. br /br /I’d like to thank morgoth for pointing out Shadow Ninja. I have had this movie pack since at least the time when it first came out, and never bothered to check out that movie until i read his review of this pack last night. When I got home i popped the movie in and was thoroughly entertained. So thank you. br /br /Now on to the actual reivew of the pack itself….br /br /due to the fact that i have seen little if any of the movies featured all the way through, i shall end this review by giving a list of the more noteworthy movies to look out for on this pack.br /br /The aformentioned Shadow Ninja (which should definitly be the first movie to watch as soon as you get this.)br /Tiger Love br /Kung Fu artsbr /Chase Step by Stepbr /Deadly Duo AKA Two Great Cavaliers (which is not to be confused with the Ti Lung epic of the same name)br /Fighting Madbr /The Master: Max and out of time step (which are actually episodes of a tv series)br /The heroes of Shaolin 1 and 2br /The impossible kid (a martial arts movie featuring A MIDGET! has to be seen to be believed!)br /The street fighter, Return of the street fighter (a duo of great movies featuring samurai master sonny chiba)br /Ten fingers of death AKA Master with cracked fingers (possibly jackie chan’s first starring role and a great movie)br /Snake Fist Dynamo (mentioning it only to say look for the brooklyn zu version called dragon snake fist thats uncut)br /br /if i’ve missed any it would be because i haven’t actually seen them and therefore do not know they are good.

Casting Rip Torn as an admiral was inspired. Kelsey Grammar was understated, yet delightfully unpredictable, as a sub captain of misfits. Harry Dean Stanton made a totally convincing old sea dog. Bruce Dern and Rob Schneider played obnoxiously ambitious nut jobs to perfection. Lauren Holly was sympathetic as a dive officer thrust into a traditionally male environment. The sailors’ imitations of Frank Sinatra, as well as of a whale couple swimming along side the sub, were amazing. The plot had the right mix of conflict and comic relief. The only other thing I could wish for is a sequel.

Down Periscope Feature

Down Periscope Overview

Kelsey Grammer sails from TV’s “Frasier” to the big screen in this screwball comedy co-starring Lauren Holly and Rip Torn. Veteran skipper John Dodge (Grammer) will never be a textbook officer, but he’s a brilliant seaman who’s always wanted to command a nuclear submarine. Unfortunately, Admiral Graham (Bruce Dern) would rather sink the fleet than give Dodge his own boat. So Dodge is given the helm of a diesel-powered WW2 sub crewed by a collection of maladjusted, mistake-prone misfits. Then he’s tagged “the enemy” in a crucial war game, and ordered to take on the U.S. Navy’s best. Batten down the hatches for unstoppable hilarity that takes 200 years of naval tradition¿and throws it all overboard!

Down Periscope Specifications

Kelsey Grammer stars as the captain of a rust-bucket submarine who is fighting for his career by proving his skills in a contest against far more sophisticated ships. Rob Schneider provides comic support as an uptight ensign, and Lauren Holly plays an officer who has to fight her own will-they-accept-me-because-I’m-a-woman anxieties. The film didn’t do well at the box office, but it is actually pretty funny, Grammer is enjoyable, and the above-the-water/below-the-water action sequences are as good as any in most submarine films. –Tom Keogh

He was super cool tooling around the strip in his vintage red Thunderbird with the extremely rare car phone. He had a cool converted warehouse office behind Circus Circus. He was never scrapping for money since he was on retainer to The Desert Inn owned by Phil Roth (Tony Curtis). He had a smart sexy secretary in Beatrice (Phyllis Davis) and a ditzy sexy secretary in Anglie (Judy Landers). Both ladies were part time dancers at various venus so they always showed off their legs while answering the phones. Binzer (Bart Braverman) was his goofy flunky that lightened up the intense action. Tanna seemed at ease whether dealing with superstar headliners or infamous gutter dwellers. Vega$: The First Season, Volume 2 is another jackpot of celebrities needing a sleuth in Sin City.br /br /”Serve, Volley and Kill” brings danger to the tennis courts at Caesars Palace. Randolph Mantooth (Emergency) is a John McEnroe-esque hot head with a racket. He’s worried about his sister (child star Pamelyn Ferdin) since mobsters want him to take a dive on this headlining match. Who can be setting him up for a fall: Lynda Day George (Mission: Impossible, Christopher George (Rat Patrol), Mamie Van Doren or Don DeFore (Hazel)? The only innocent star is Dawn Wells (Gilligan’s Island) since she’s just Tanna’s tennis partner. Red Buttons runs a wedding chapel scam that Binzer must bust. “Ghost of Ripper” has local citizen killing hookers in the style of Jack the Ripper. Tanna and Lt. David Nelson (Mission: Impossible’s Greg Morris) must rely on the research of Murray Matheson to get a historical jump on the copycat killer. Matheson was the human search engine on Banacek. George Takei (Star Trek’s Sulu) is the medical examiner poking through the butchered victims. “The Eleventh Event” finds a crippled gold medal winning decathlete being the victim of a kidnapping scheme. Who could plot such a dastardly crime? Robert Loggia (The Sopranos) wants more than a gold medal. Muhammad Ali makes a colorful cameo to inspire his fellow Olympian. “Kill Dan Tanna!” is an explosive tale of Dan’s old Vietnam war buddies wanting revenge. They break out a flame thrower for the big finale.br /br /”Death Mountain” lets Tanna’s recurring pal Harlon Two-Leaf (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’s Will Sampson) get a shot at being the new chief of his tribe. The old chief was killed by Keye Luke (Charlie Chan’s Number One Son). His Japanese business connections have plans for the tribal land. Joan Van Ark is a really unbelievable archeologist. “Best Friends” has a killer after Phil Roth. Who is the assassin? Why it’s Tanna’s old pal (Family’s John Rubenstein). Tanna really needed better friends . “Demand and Supply” is a shocker about high school girls that become prostitutes on the strip. Who could be behind such an evil thing? Would you believe John Fielder (Mr. Peterson on The Bob Newhart Show)? “Everything I Touch” has Tanna’s date get murdered while she’s getting ready for a romantic evening with him. The serial killer also goes after Judy Landers.br /br /”Doubtful Target” is Binzer’s Death Wish. He finally introduces Tanna to his blind girlfriend. She’s hotter than you’d expect for the flunky. However their love comes to an end when Leslie Nielsen puts her in the scope of his rifle. The king of the fart jokes was once a cold blooded killer. Binzer wants to hunt down and kill Nielsen worse than a critic forced to review Nielsen’s last dozen straight to video comic movies. Can Tanna keep Binzer from going to jail for being a homicidal maniac? Tanna’s also lost his woman this season so he can talk from the heart. “Touch of Death” has a newlywed bride’s husband disappear. He vanishes so completely that the minister has no record of their marriage from the day before. “A Way to Live” leaps with Marlyn Mason in the role of a female daredevil. Somebody doesn’t want her jump to be a success. “The Visitor” darkens up Kim Cattrall as a Middle Eastern princess in jeopardy. Can Tanna prevent an international incident?br /br /Vega$: The First Season, Volume 2 captures middle school Las Vegas since they really did shoot in Sin City. This is a real glimpse of the casinos, showrooms and cocktail lounges once graced by Nipsey Russell and Roy Clark. Robert Ulrich fits in so nicely in this environment. He pulls off wearing a vest with jean. What makes Vega$ addictive is that it combines the usual detective cases with the casting fun of The Love Boat. The show brings the glitz and glamor to the dirty world of crime. This is what the non-Farrah Fawcett Majors era Charlie’s Angels were lacking. Vega$ is a series that’s as hypnotic as the revolving fruit of a slot machine. Although no matter what the outcome, Dan Tanna will always walk away a winner.

Vega$: The First Season, Volume 2 Feature

Vega$: The First Season, Volume 2 Overview

In this popular series, handsome, fun loving, private eye, Dan Tanna, drives around Las Vegas in his vintage Thunderbird solving private cases but is also on retainer to a wealthy casino owner to keep crime out of his hotels. He is helped by his smart and sexy assistant, a sexy and not too smart chorus girl who takes messages for him, and his enthusiastic, yet inept, legman.

She’s cast as a bad girl(as if that wonderful cover didn’t fill you in) and she loves to play with her boobs and aim automatic handguns and ride one lucky guy like a horse(not sexually, just,um,like a horse).

Most of the girls are adorable, including a particularly exotic brunette in leather who opens up the DVD and the always welcome addition of Erica Campbell and girls in bunny outfits getting hunted by fellow babes.

This one differs in actually having some spoken dialouge and the girls trying to act with menace and deviance, but honestly there much too cute for that.

Zemanova is the obvious key attraction, but she does not go full nude like in the first offering, still it’s hard to complain.

Brainless entertainment for skin fans looking for something different, and clearly an enjoyable entry for those who enjoy this wacky softcore series.
